September 13 () –
Turkish security forces have “neutralised” a suspected senior member of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in a new operation in northern Iraq, but the group, considered a terrorist group by Ankara, has not commented on the matter.
Security sources quoted by the Turkish state news agency Anatolia have indicated that the suspect is Azad Akinci, alias ‘Adil Mardin’, who is believed to be in charge of PKK operations in the Majmur camp, the area where the operation was carried out by the intelligence services.
The Turkish military has been involved in regular military operations against the PKK in Iraq, where the group has numerous bases, since a ceasefire between the government and the armed group broke down in July 2015. The Iraqi government outlawed the group in March amid a rapprochement with Turkey that includes efforts to strengthen security ties.
