The director of Ecuador’s Penitentiary was killed Thursday and another person was injured in an armed attack on the streets of Guayaquil, the prison agency SNAI reported.
María Daniela Icaza became the second Ecuadorian prison director to be murdered this month.
The prison director “died as a victim of an armed attack on the Daule road in Guayaquil, while she was being transferred to the Guasmo Sur Hospital,” SNAI said in a statement, without giving further details.
While the police wrote in X that they have begun investigations to locate those responsible for the incident.
President Daniel Noboa, who is seeking re-election in 2025, declared an internal war in January to confront criminal gangs operating in the country’s prisons and streets, which he called terrorists.
