The rise of the cholitas in Bolivia

In Bolivia, cholita women have long been despised and discriminated against. Forty years ago, these women, dressed in large traditional costumes, bowler hats and long black braids, were banned from cinemas and certain restaurants. Since 2010, with the inclusion of indigenous women’s rights in the Constitution, they have experienced unprecedented social progress, to the point of achieving true national recognition. They are now attracting all the attention, even at the highest political and media levels. A real success, while Bolivia remains one of the countries in Latin America with the highest rates of violence against women.
