Spain calls for calm after Venezuelan legislature requests to break relations

On Thursday, September 12, the Spanish Minister of Economy, Trade and Business, Carlos Cuerpo, urged calm regarding diplomatic and commercial ties between his country and Caracas, one day after the president of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, urged the Government of Nicolás Maduro to break relations with Madrid. The anger of the Venezuelan government was unleashed after the Spanish Congress of Deputies approved a symbolic motion that recognizes Edmundo González Urrutia as president of Venezuela, after the questioned elections of July 28. However, the pronouncement of the Legislative of the European nation is not binding and the Administration of Pedro Sánchez has not yet recognized González or Maduro as the winner of the elections, given that Caracas has not published the electoral records.
