Former Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha charged with corruption

September 12 () –

The Special Prosecutor’s Office against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK) has charged former Prime Minister Sali Berisha on Wednesday with “passive corruption committed in cooperation” in the ‘Partizani’ case, which investigates a change in legislation made by his government in 2008 to allow the privatization of sports facilities expropriated during the communist era.

This was announced by Berisha himself upon leaving the SKAP headquarters, where he claimed that it was a “pyramid scheme” and a “political revenge”, according to the newspaper ‘Shekulli’.

The former president spent about half an hour in the building, where a group of his followers waited for him demanding the release of the politician, who also confirmed that these charges “have not changed.”

In October 2023, SPAK had already announced the indictment of Berisha in this very case, related to the purchase and sale of land belonging to a sports club in favour of his son-in-law, Jamarbr Malltezi, who is also indicted. The former leader has been on the US sanctions list since 2021 for suspicions of corruption and links to organised crime.

In 1992, Albanians elected him their first freely elected president after the collapse of the communist regime. He later served as the country’s prime minister from 2005 to 2013. Berisha also headed the Democratic Party of Albania (PD) until 2013, a post he returned to last year.
