Muslim Brotherhood’s political wing in Jordan wins legislative elections, according to preliminary results

The chairwoman of Jordan’s General Electoral District Committee, Fidaa al-Hamoud, announced on Wednesday the victory of the Islamic Action Front (FAI), the political wing of the Muslim Brotherhood, in the legislative elections held on Tuesday, although these are preliminary results.

The FAI won 31 seats after collecting some 460,000 votes, well ahead of the second force, Al Mithaq, with 93,680 votes and three seats, closely followed by the National Islamic Party (87,519 votes and three seats) and the Irada Party (75,121 votes and three seats), according to the newspaper ‘Addustour’.

Other formations that have also obtained representation are the National Union Party (66,227 votes and two seats), the Progress Party (61,199 votes and two seats), the Labour Party (50,142 votes and two seats), Tierra Bendita (50,244 votes and two seats), Namaa (45,859 votes and two seats, the Labour Alliance (45,859 votes and two seats) and Azm (41,891 votes and two seats).

The president of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), Musa al-Maaita, said that 104 of the 138 seats will be occupied by party members, while the remaining 34 will be independents. There will be 27 women in this new parliament.

The turnout in the elections was around 32 percent, with 250,000 more votes than in the previous elections. It should be noted that some 515,000 Jordanians living abroad were not able to vote because the electoral law excludes expatriates, unless they move to Jordanian territory to vote, even though their names were included in the census of the Ministry of the Interior.

This is the first vote on the composition of Parliament after the reshuffle of the electoral law passed in 2022 as part of a reform process to increase political representation that also led to an increase in the powers of King Abdullah II.

The vote also takes place amid the crisis in the Middle East following the military offensive launched by Israel against the Gaza Strip following the attacks carried out on October 7, 2023 by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) and other Palestinian factions.
