UNRWA says six of its workers have been killed in an Israeli attack on a school in Gaza

It is “the highest number of deaths” of agency personnel “in a single incident”

September 11 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The UN agency for Palestinian refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) has denounced this Wednesday that six of its workers have been killed in an Israeli attack on a school located in the Nuseirat camp, in the centre of the Gaza Strip, which has also claimed the lives of at least 14 Palestinians.

“This is the highest number of deaths among our staff in a single incident. Among the dead were the director of the UNRWA shelter and other members of the team providing assistance to displaced people,” he said on social media.

The agency said the school, home to 12,000 displaced people – mainly women and children – “has been attacked five times since the war began.” “No one is safe in Gaza. No one is spared,” it added.

UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini said that at least 220 UNRWA staff members have been killed in Gaza since the beginning of the war. “Endless and senseless killings, day after day,” he said.

“Humanitarian personnel, facilities and operations have been flagrantly and relentlessly ignored since the beginning of the war. The longer impunity prevails, the more irrelevant humanitarian law and the Geneva Convention will become,” he stressed.

Shortly before, the Palestinian Civil Defence had reported that at least 14 people, including children, had died as a result of the bombing. The Israeli army had claimed that the school was being used by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) as a “command and control” site to “plan” “terrorist” operations against Israeli forces.
