United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Tuesday condemned the Israeli army’s attack on the Al Mauasi refugee camp, a designated “humanitarian” area in the southern Gaza Strip.
“The use of heavy weapons in densely populated areas is unacceptable. Palestinians had moved to this area of Khan Yunis in search of refuge after being repeatedly ordered to do so by the Israeli authorities,” spokesman Stéphane Dujarric told a press conference.
He also stressed that “there is no safe place in Gaza.” “We reiterate once again our call for an immediate ceasefire and the immediate and unconditional release of all Israeli and other hostages still held in Gaza,” said his spokesman.
Dujarric also explained that following the attack, the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has set up a team for the area with the aim of “identifying the most urgent needs of the population.”
The Hamas-controlled Gaza Civil Defense said at least 40 Palestinians were killed and 60 others wounded in the shelling of the camp.
The press office of the Gaza authorities has denounced the “horrible massacre committed by the occupation army, which has bombed tents of displaced people” and has pointed out that there are dozens of people missing, so the death toll could rise in the coming hours.
