September 9 () –
French authorities have identified the prime suspect in the fatal shooting of a Grenoble municipal official who tried to stop him from fleeing after causing a car crash.
The municipal official, a 49-year-old man, died on Monday in hospital after being shot twice the day before. The main suspect is still at large but has already been identified.
French authorities have carried out four searches in the last few hours in places where the suspect, who has a criminal record for various crimes, is believed to be living, according to information collected by the BFMTV channel.
The incident occurred early on Sunday morning, when a traffic accident occurred in the centre of Grenoble. At that moment, a municipal cleaning service worker came to assist those involved in the accident.
When he saw that the driver of one of the vehicles was responsible for what happened, he tried to stop him and prevent him from fleeing, at which point the suspect shot him twice. The injured man was taken to hospital, where he eventually died.
Grenoble Mayor Éric Piolle said at a press conference that the authorities were doing “everything possible” to capture the perpetrator of this “heinous crime.” A tribute was also paid to the deceased outside the town hall on Monday.
