Venezuelan Vice President Talks About 'Broad Talks' With Spain Regarding Edmundo Gonzalez

Delcy Rodríguez thus contradicts Albares, who denies negotiations between Madrid and Caracas

September 9 () –

Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodríguez contradicted Spain’s Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares on Sunday, saying that there had been “extensive conversations and contacts” to ensure the departure of former Venezuelan opposition candidate Edmundo González from the country to Spain, while the head of Spanish diplomacy denied any negotiations on the matter.

“A forger is not a good advisor. Extensive conversations and contacts took place to operationalize the departure of the opposition leader González Urrutia from the country with the full guarantees offered by a safe-conduct, the product of the agreement between both governments. The landing of a Spanish Air Force aircraft with authorization from the aeronautical authorities of Venezuela is a communication event,” Rodríguez said on his Telegram channel.

These statements refer to words by Albares in which he affirms that “there has been no political negotiation between the government of Spain and the government of Venezuela” and that the request for political asylum has been a “personal” decision of González.

“The Spanish Government has not provided any compensation for Edmundo González’s departure,” Albares said.

Edmundo González arrived in Madrid on Sunday after leaving Caracas on a Spanish Air Force plane after spending more than a month sheltered in diplomatic offices in the Netherlands. On September 5, he left for the Spanish diplomatic headquarters and left the country on Saturday.
