September 9 (EUROPA PRESS) –
Kuwait’s Emir Meshal al Ahmad al Sabah issued a decree on Sunday accepting the resignation of the Minister of Petroleum and Deputy Prime Minister, Emad Mohamad al Atiqi, who took office in mid-January as part of the formation of the country’s new executive, which was dissolved in May with the preservation of some positions, such as that of Al Atiqi.
He then announced that the current Minister of Finance and Minister of State for Economy and Investment, Nora Suleiman al Fassam, will be the acting head of this ministerial portfolio, according to the Kuwaiti news agency, KUNA.
The country is in the midst of an economic and political crisis marked by paralysis due to the resignation of several cabinets over ongoing friction with the opposition-dominated parliament. The standoff has hampered efforts by the wealthy Gulf oil producer to reduce its heavy dependence on crude and push through fiscal reforms.
