September 8 (EUROPA PRESS) –
At least 48 people have been killed in an explosion involving a fuel tanker on Sunday afternoon in the western Nigerian state of Niger.
The accident occurred on the road between Lapai and Agaie and also caused the death of 50 cows that were burned to death, according to the Nigerian newspaper ‘This Day’.
The tanker collided with a truck loaded with passengers and livestock, the Niger State Emergency Management Agency said.
Two other vehicles, a crane and a pickup truck, were also burnt in the fire. The second truck was plying a route from Widil in Kano state to Lagos city.
The agency said it had sent personnel to “carry out a search and rescue operation” and warned that there may be more bodies trapped inside the truck. The 48 bodies recovered have been buried in a mass grave in the town of Agaie.
