September 8 () –
French far-right leader Marine Le Pen has said that President Emmanuel Macron “took into account the criteria of the National Rally” when appointing Michel Barnier as the new prime minister, as he believes he has similar views on a key issue such as migration policy.
In this matter, “he seems to have the same position as us,” said Le Pen, in an interview with ‘La Tribune Dimanche’ in which she again built bridges with the new head of government, without yet clarifying whether she will support his appointment to the National Assembly. She will wait to hear concrete political proposals.
According to the former presidential candidate, Barnier is “at least aware” that “immigration is a big problem.” In fact, the new prime minister has already made this issue one of the main themes of his campaign to try to be a candidate for the Elysée in the 2022 elections.
Le Pen, who has said she is not seeking a political “blockade” like the New Popular Front (NFP) of the Left, which “has threatened to censure everyone”, also expressed in statements to the media from the town of Hénin-Beaumont that she hopes Barnier will fulfil his commitment to speak with “all political forces”.
He wants the new prime minister to “be respectful” of the “eleven million voters” of the far-right party, also recalling that the National Rally was the party that received the most votes in the European elections in May.
CRITICISM FROM THE LEFT
The French left has made it clear that it will not negotiate with Barnier, as it believes that his appointment does not take into account the victory of the NFP in the legislative elections. The coordinator of La France Insoumise (LFI), Manuel Bompard, lamented this Sunday on CNEWS that Macron and Le Pen “have agreed to steal the vote of the French.”
“The President of the Republic has given the National Rally the right to keep his government alive or kill it,” he warned, a day after thousands of people took to the streets, encouraged by left-wing parties, to protest against Barnier’s appointment.
