September 7 (EUROPA PRESS) –
Sudanese authorities have announced the opening of a camp to receive Ethiopian civilians and soldiers who have crossed the border in recent days following fighting between the army and militants in the Ethiopian region of Amhara (north).
Sudan’s refugee commissioner, Musa Ali Atrun, said the camp had been opened near the Galabat border crossing in the south-east, which was closed this week due to the clashes, according to the Sudanese news portal Sudan Tribune.
He also said that dozens of Ethiopian civilians and soldiers have already arrived at the site, and are being disarmed at the border before entering Sudanese territory, adding that some of the soldiers were ill and had to be transferred to the town of Gedaref.
The situation stems from the fighting that has taken place in recent days on Ethiopian territory, where the Fano militias have recently made progress. Addis Ababa declared a state of emergency in Amhara in August 2023 due to clashes with these militias, which collaborated with Amhara troops during the 2020-2022 war against the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).
The Fano militias were positioned on the side of the Amhara special forces in the war against the TPLF and have also participated in operations against the rebel group Oromia Liberation Army (OLA). The government’s decision to disband these special forces led many of their members to join these militias and carry out attacks against the army.
