At least 17 children have died and another 14 have been seriously injured in a fire that broke out early Friday morning in a dormitory at a school in central Kenya, authorities in the African country have confirmed.
Kenyan National Police spokesperson Resila Onyango told Nation FM that 16 of the victims died instantly, while another died shortly after being admitted to hospital.
“There was a fire at the residence. It happened overnight and we are yet to determine the cause,” Onyango said, adding that he could not yet confirm whether firefighters had managed to contain the blaze at the centre, located north of the capital, Nairobi.
