Carlos Hugo Preciado (Tarragona, 1969) is one of the new members of the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ). A judge for 17 years, he has a position at the High Court of Justice of Catalonia, although in the last stage he has worked as a coordinating lawyer at the Supreme Court, specialising in social jurisdiction. He is a member of the progressive bloc of the body, where he arrived at the initiative of Sumar after receiving the endorsement of the association Judges for Democracy.
Preciado receives elDiario.es hours after the solemn act of Judicial Opening, a ceremony marked by the renewal of the CGPJ and the election of Isabel Perelló as president, with whom he says he feels “very satisfied”. He affirms that gender equality and “regaining prestige” in the eyes of the public and the judicial career will be some of the challenges of the institution after the blockage and political polarization of the last mandate. And he maintains that “the function of defending judicial independence does not include many initiatives or communications that have been made with a clearly partisan tone from the Council”.
