Canadian parliamentarians plan to visit Taiwan in the fall

About a dozen Canadian members of parliament are planning to visit Taiwan starting in October to express solidarity with the island’s democracy and develop trade opportunities.

The Canadian politicians who will travel to the Asian island in the fall are part of Parliament’s permanent committee on International Trade. Members of this committee also belong to the Canada-Taiwan Friendship Group.

“The trade commission is very eager to go and visit Taiwan and see what opportunities there are for deeper trade relations between our two countries,” said the group’s president, and Liberal MP, Judy Sgro, in statements collected by CBC News.

Sgro has acknowledged the “significant tension” in international relations after the visit of the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, to Taiwan on August 2 and 3. In response, China held large-scale military exercises near the island.

“Democracy is appreciated and is an important part of what we all live every day. We need to protect other countries that have fought for their freedom and democracy,” Canadian politics has expressed.

Thus, Sgro has maintained that they will use “diplomacy” to carry out this “necessary” trip. “I am trying to be diplomatic in my comments, but I am clearly proud that Canada is also taking on China. And I think that rejection is very important,” he said.
