Two people killed in fresh clashes between armed groups east of Libyan capital

September 6 (EUROPA PRESS) –

At least two people have been killed in fresh clashes between armed groups in the Libyan town of Khoms, east of the capital Tripoli, amid heightened tensions over the deepening political crisis following disputes over the dismissal of the governor of the Central Bank.

The clashes, which broke out late on Wednesday, continued into Thursday, prompting local authorities to declare a state of emergency, according to the Libya Observer. In addition to the fatalities, at least three people were confirmed injured.

The Khoms mayor’s office has warned the population not to go to the area affected by the clashes, although there has been relative calm in the area in recent hours, according to a statement posted on its Facebook account.

So far, none of the armed groups present in the town have commented on the incidents in the city, located about 100 kilometres east of Libya, in an area controlled by internationally recognised authorities.

The country has been rocked for years by a dispute between Prime Minister of Unity Abdul Hamid Dbeibé and the authorities in the east following the postponement of presidential elections in 2021, with numerous armed groups seeking to consolidate their power in different parts of the country, including the capital.
