Government proposes to increase diesel fare by $200 per month until December

Protest

The National Government, in the midst of dialogue with the transport sector, made them a proposal to stop the blockades that have been occurring in the country since Sunday: modify the decree that agreed to the increase from $1,904 to just $1,904. $200 taking into account a series of conditions.

It is worth remembering that the Ministry of Transport set up the Unified Command Post and initiated a dialogue table with the bases of the transport sector, where more than 950 people participated, both in person and virtually. As a result of the dialogue, the National Government proposed, in the first place, to suspend additional increases to the price of diesel fuel from September 3.

Yesterday – September 4th – in the evening hours, the Government put on the table the possibility of modifying the current resolution of the increase in the price of fuel, so that the increase is $200 per month, until December. In addition, the National Government, together with the leaders of the transport union bases throughout the country, intends to start technical meetings to address the structural issues of the sector, and those that can be identified in the spaces.

“The President of the Republic, Gustavo Petro Urrego, reiterates his interest in maintaining dialogue during these days of demonstrations, where we have limited the use of force. We believe in a solution through dialogue. It is a historic moment where we listen to the bases of the transport union, that is why our proposal is to accompany the measure with the development of working groups and address the just causes that they face today, in order to democratize transportation in the country. This implies taking actions that go beyond what has been proposed during these days. The President’s instruction is to maintain direct dialogue and have all the necessary channels to guarantee communication at all levels,” declared the Minister of Transport, Maria Constanza Garcia Alicastro.

It is worth remembering that this dialogue arises from two needs: 1) the deficit of the Fuel Price Stabilization Fund, which in 2023 represented $20.5 billion and 2) the historical unmet requirements that have been put on the table by the sector representatives.

Besides, “We reiterate that peaceful protest is guaranteed, however, we call for maintaining humanitarian corridors at the protest points, where respect for the fundamental rights of other citizens prevails, thus allowing the passage of people with special constitutional protection,” they closed.

So far, the transporters have not commented on this initiative nor have they made a decision.
