The death toll from the Russian army’s attack on the northeastern Ukrainian city of Poltava on Tuesday has risen to 55 dead and more than 300 wounded, according to information provided by the country’s authorities on Thursday.
The State Emergency Service of Ukraine said in a statement that a total of 328 people were injured as a result of the launch of several missiles by Russian troops, which mainly hit a six-storey residential building that was partially destroyed.
“There are probably still people under the rubble,” the statement said, adding that rescue teams have managed to remove more than 2,000 tons of debris. Emergency teams are continuing their efforts to find more survivors, although the death toll could rise in the coming days.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Tuesday that the shells had hit near a school and stressed that “Russian scum will certainly be held accountable for this attack.” He also called on his international partners to contribute weapons to “stop this terror,” noting that such equipment “is needed in Ukraine and not in a warehouse somewhere else.”
Military sources quoted by Russian news agency TASS said the building attacked was a Ukrainian army training centre in Poltava and claimed that more than 300 Ukrainian “militiamen” were “killed or wounded” in the attack. “There are certainly foreign instructors among them,” they said.
