Sánchez vindicates the figure of Escrivá and assures that he will be a "excellent" Governor of the Bank of Spain

September 4 () –

The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has praised the figure of José Luis Escrivá as the new governor of the Bank of Spain and has assured that, with his appointment, “the institution gains a great governor and the Spanish economy is strengthened and prestigious at European and international level.”

The head of the Executive confirmed on Wednesday that he had already informed the King of the appointments of Escrivá as Governor of the Bank of Spain and Óscar López as Minister for Digital Transformation and the Civil Service.

In response to opposition criticism of Escrivá’s appointment, Sánchez has come to his defence, saying that he is “one of the best economists in the country and one of its greatest experts in monetary policy.” He also said that the Bank of Spain has gained “a great governor and the Spanish economy has emerged strengthened and prestigious at European and international level.”

“I believe that few, very few economists, have the knowledge, experience and stature that José Luis Escrivá has. That is why I am convinced that he will be an excellent governor of the Bank of Spain,” Pedro Sánchez stressed during an institutional statement from the Moncloa Palace.

The president stressed that, throughout his long career, Escrivá has worked in all the areas that make up the career of a prestigious economist. He has been a member and director of two of the country’s main research services, that of the Bank of Spain and that of BBVA.

He also stressed that José Luis Escrivá has played a “key” role in the development of the euro as head of the monetary policy division of the European Central Bank, as well as having been director for America of the Bank for International Settlements in Basel. He then moved to the national public sector, first as the first president of the Independent Authority for Fiscal Responsibility (AIReF), under a Popular Party government “and then as an independent minister of the progressive coalition government.”

According to Sánchez, Escrivá has led important reforms that are key to the country, such as the pension reform and the reconstruction of the Toledo Pact, has created the minimum living income, has addressed the reform of the civil service and has promoted the digitalisation of the economy, in addition to heading the management of a migration policy based on the labour and social integration of migrant workers.

The President of the Government has thus highlighted Escrivá’s commitment to Spain and has thanked him for the personal and professional sacrifices he has made to serve his country. “I believe that it is essential that the best people participate in the management of what is common, what is public, and that their efforts are applauded and recognised,” he stressed.

ÓSCAR LÓPEZ: “HE WILL KNOW HOW TO SERVE WITH EFFICIENCY, HONESTY AND DEVOTION”

Following Escrivá’s appointment as Governor of the Bank of Spain, Sánchez has appointed his chief of staff as the new Minister for Digital Transformation and the Civil Service.

“I have known Óscar López for a long time. I know of his political ability, his capacity for work, his commitment to the country,” said the head of the Executive.

A graduate of the Complutense University of Madrid with a double major in international studies and public administration, Óscar López has worked in various public institutions, both national and European, as well as in the Government of Spain.

Sánchez stressed his key role in public management as head of the cabinet of the presidency of the government and said that he has been a great promoter of the technological and audiovisual revolution.

“He is well acquainted with public administration at all levels and has extensive experience working with the private sector, so I am convinced that he will be a key and exemplary minister who will know how to serve all Spaniards effectively, honestly and with dedication, promoting the digitalisation of our country and modernising its public function,” emphasised the president.

“DIEGO RUBIO WILL BRING HIS INTEGRITY AND TECHNICAL RIGOR”

The new director of the Cabinet of the Presidency of the Government will be Diego Rubio, an Extremaduran with a degree in History from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, ”with the best academic record in the country, having obtained the National Award for Academic Excellence,” according to Sánchez.

Over the past five years, Diego Rubio has worked in the Cabinet of the Presidency of the Government, first as Director of Foresight and Strategy, and later as Secretary General of Public Policies and European Affairs.

“He will now bring his integrity, his technical rigor and his cross-cutting vision as Director of the Cabinet of the Presidency of the Government to continue preparing Spain for the future to come,” said the president.
