Chile will be represented in the international final of the Copa Cervezas de América 2022 for 139 beers

There are many beers, but not all dare to be evaluated by professional tasters. This is not the case of 1,273 beers, of 299 breweries that were presented to the Copa Cervezas de América in its IX version.

The 119 Chilean producers that competed presented 395 beers, of which 103 are from the Los Ríos Region. All the participants were anxious about the results that were delivered on Saturday, August 13, highlighting the categories of Gold, Silver and Bronze, which are awarded by the organization of the Copa Cervezas de América or, failing that, being part of 30% of the participants who qualified for a second attempt to reach the podium in October this year.

The Cup is held within the framework of the FIC 22-09 project “Strengthening the management of business nodes of regional products”, financed by the Innovation Fund for Competitiveness (FIC) of the Regional Government of Los Ríos and its Regional Council and executed by the San Sebastián University (Valdivia Campus). The director of the FIC project and USS Commercial Engineering liaison academician, Emilio Becker, highlighted these first results thanks to the co-creation of the project by the Technical Table, in which the Austral and San Sebastián Universities, Unión Cervecero participate Los Ríos, Convention Bureau, Valdivia Chamber of Commerce of Industries, Kunstmann Brewery, Bundor Brewery, Neck Black Brewery and Cerveceras Sur Women’s Community, and the constant technical support from the Regional Government.

If you enjoy a good beer, you have the mission of reviewing the list of award-winning beers at the end of the news, for now, we highlight some that achieved gold in the competition, such as the La Bestia brewery, with its award-winning Belgian Tripel and Kunstmann brewery, with Hoppy Lager, both from Valdivia; Original brewery, with its Pan Queque beer, from Santiago; Tencai brewery, with its Eclipse beer, from Temuco; Intrinsical brewery, with The dark side of the chorito, from Santiago; Rural brewery of Lituache, with La que te di te; Mowa brewery, with La Llorona, from Valparaíso.

Also outstanding in Los Ríos was the Nothus Brewing Company, from Valdivia, which won a silver medal with its Magnitude 9.5 beer and bronze with Amanita RED. In addition, five other beers from its preparation qualified for the second round in October. Also from Los Ríos we can highlight Cervecería Sayka, with the silver medal with its Sun Beer and another in competition that went on to the second classification. It is worth mentioning that each country will have its colors represented in the medals that will be sent to the winning breweries.

For Daniel Trivelli, president of the Copa Cervezas de América, the number of participants “It was a true marathon, but what we saw so far was a true celebration of Latin American beer culture. We are very satisfied and we hope to be in more territories with the national stages next year, reaching the local markets”, Daniel projects.

In order to select the award-winning beers, there was a panel of 24 expert tasters from Belgium, Argentina, Brazil and Chile, who for two consecutive days evaluated the participating beers one by one. Leonardo Caiafa, director judge of the Copa Cervezas de América, explains that to evaluate and choose the best beers, they are evaluated according to categories.

The evaluation of the beer considers all its attributes, from the presentation of the beer, color, taste, aftertaste, turbidity, head, aromas, if the aroma is appropriate to the style, how expressive the flavor is and how pleasant it is. “The evaluation time per beer is 10 minutes, they are evaluated individually and then there is a discussion between the judges. A group of beers is evaluated, comments are made on its correct, incorrect and improvable characteristics, a score of 0 to 50 points is given to it, the difference between the judges cannot be more than 5 points. Then it continues with another beer, ”explains the director judge.

There were a total of 24 judges and one of them was Karin Díaz, who is an agricultural engineer and a certified beer judge since 2016, since that date she has tasted beers at a professional level. “The experience in the Cup is super interesting, it really is a professional competition, there are beers that are on the market. It’s interesting to see the variety there is,” she commented.

Another judge of the Cup was Gabriel Lara, who has been tasting cherries in national and international competitions for 8 years, commented that these competitions serve to “improve the quality of Chilean beer.” Sofía Marfán, since 2018 began to taste beers and commented that, “you can see how beer production in Chile has improved year after year.”

During a week from October 24 to 30, in Valdivia, Chile, an international stage will be held, which will bring together the other countries, with the exception of Argentina, Brazil and Chile, and a great final of the Copa Cervezas de América.
