Melenchon calls for mobilization again in the face of Macron's failure to decide on a prime minister

September 4 () –

La France Insoumise leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon on Wednesday criticised French President Emmanuel Macron for his lack of resolve to appoint a prime minister after learning that his decision could be delayed for another day, and called again for mobilisation this Saturday to remove him from the Elysée.

“Let Macron appoint whoever he wants or whoever he can (…) Every day that passes in the confusion created by the president is a blow to the credibility of his mandate and his role,” Mélenchon said on his personal blog.

“He hesitates again and again, thinking that the end will justify the means,” said Mélenchon, who reproached him for seeking “a nomination immediately praised by the entire media class” and “without censorship”, in reference to Macron’s justifications for not opting for the candidate of the New Popular Front.

For this reason, he has called again for the mobilization that the student unions have called for this Saturday. “The Insumisos will take to the streets to start the engine of dismissal.”

Former President François Hollande has also criticised Macron for his problems in making decisions. “To govern is to appoint. It is the first action of a president,” said the current deputy of the National Assembly on French television. “He has a problem with his relationship with the decision,” he said.

According to reports on Wednesday, the appointment of a new prime minister was due to take place tonight, more than two months after the parliamentary elections in which the left-wing coalition New Popular Front won the most seats. However, it seems that he will have to wait a few more hours.

The choice for prime minister is between the Socialist Bernard Cazeneuve, who briefly held the post between 2016 and 2017, and the conservative Xavier Bertrand, although the possibility of the right-wing Michel Barnier, former minister in various portfolios and former European commissioner, is also not ruled out.
