“Natural Born Killers” is already a notoriously wild film with its satirical killing spree sparked by a twisted romance, but apparently Robert Downey Jr. angry director Oliver Stone with his efforts to make the project even more unhinged.
While talking to gift In honor of the crime film’s 30th anniversary, Stone recalled how the Marvel icon annoyed him with a particularly “dumb” and lewd ad-lib.
“Come on, that’s too much! You’re going too far, Robert,” Stone said of how she reacted when Downey dipped the front flaps of his white shirt in fake blood and stuffed them into the zipper of his pants like a fake bloody penis.
Downey’s part was apparently a reference to the controversial Lorena Bobbitt In 1993, the actress cut off her husband’s penis after alleging that he had raped her. The scandal occurred during the production of the film.
“You’re ruining my movie! Forget the whole dumb penis thing. This is not… this is not dumb,” Stone added as the future “Iron Man” star mimicked a bloody member.
Downey then backed off and pulled his shirt up through the zipper, causing Stone to suddenly change her mind about the gag.
—Wait, wait… wait a second. Let me see that penis thing again, Stone told him.
The director revealed that he then ordered him to “pull it back half an inch.”
Downey reached into his pants and pulled his front tail back slightly, earning Stone’s approval. Downey’s part eventually made it into the film.
Written by Quentin Tarantino, 1994’s “Natural Born Killers” follows Juliette Lewis and Woody Harrelson as a couple who embark on an interstate killing spree. The pair become tabloid stars thanks to shy Australian television journalist Wayne Gale (played by Downey).
Downey spoke to Esquire about his struggle with addiction during the production of the film, telling the outlet that “the only time I was awake was between action and cut.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Stone revealed that Downey wasn’t the only one using recreational drugs on set.
“I have to say it was like a zoo in the sense that all the actors were on different trips,” he explained. “I think Woody was the most sane.”
Harrelson confirmed Stone’s claims, joking that he was the “Mother Teresa” of the crew.
“Oliver assured me that he didn’t mean I was the moral center of the movie, but he did mean I was the one who did the least amount of drugs,” he explained. “It had never happened to me in my career or in my life. And no one has done more drugs than me, but in this movie I was Mother Teresa.”
