Two plainclothes US soldiers were attacked on Monday in the city of Izmir by a group of about 15 members of the Turkish Youth Union (TGB), a youth branch of the opposition nationalist party Patriotic Party.
The provincial government said the attack took place in Konak district and said five other US soldiers joined the fight before police could intervene. All 15 attackers have been arrested and an investigation has been launched, Turkish television A News TV reported.
The US Embassy in Turkey has confirmed the attack and stressed that all service members are safe. “We can confirm that several US service members aboard the USS Wasp were victims of an attack today in Izmir and are now safe,” it posted on its account on social media X.
The youth organization itself has published a video on X in which several people are seen immobilizing a man in the middle of the street, hooding him and shouting slogans.
“The American military, who carry the blood of our soldiers and thousands of Palestinians on their hands, cannot dirty our country. Every time you set foot on this land, you will get what you deserve,” they warned.
