Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said Monday that the United States is using its ambassador to the Latin American country, Ken Salazar, to interfere in internal affairs, following the diplomat’s recent criticism of a controversial judicial reform promoted by the president.
Salazar said Thursday that direct election of judges, a key element of the controversial reform that has scared off investors, constitutes a “major risk” for Mexican democracy. He also said that any reform must have “safeguards” to guarantee the independence of the judiciary.
López Obrador, known by the acronym AMLO, answered “yes” when questioned at his usual morning press conference about the ambassador’s position and added that “there is nothing rational” that could lead to a break with the neighboring nation due to the importance of trade integration.
“It is no longer possible to break it (…) it is important to have a policy of economic and commercial integration with the United States and Canada, it is in the interest of the three countries of North America, to be able to grow and have a strong economic and commercial zone, in relation to other regions of the world,” he said.
