Its launch, then, would be expected towards the end of 2024 and although no details are known about the price, it is likely that the versions that are already on the market, PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Slim, will lower their cost.
PS5 Sales
The decision to launch a new console could be due to the poor performance of PlayStation sales in the last quarter, as between April and June it sold 2.4 million units, which represents a decrease compared to the 3 million consoles it sold in the same period in 2023.
It is worth noting that this behavior is not exclusive to Sony, as Nintendo also recorded declines in sales of its consoles. Nintendo detailed that it only sold 2.1 million units of its console, that is, 46.3% less than the same period last year, when it sold 3.9 million units. However, it is relevant to mention here that Switch has been on the market for seven years now.
Xbox, meanwhile, saw a 42% decline in units sold in the quarter, due in part to a focus on software and moving content to its cloud platform.
