At least fourteen people have died from the sinking of a boat with dozens of migrants on board off the coast of the Senegalese town of Kafountine, located in the Zinguinchor region (south).
The governor of Ziguinchor, Guedj Diouf, noted early on Tuesday that eight people had died, although sources cited by the Senegalese state news agency, APS, have raised the number of deaths to fourteen after the recovery of six bodies during the afternoon of the Tuesday.
The boat, in which more than a hundred migrants were traveling, sank on Monday off the coast of Kafountine, after which the authorities confirmed the rescue of more than 90 people.
Likewise, Diouf has pointed out that one of the rescued has been admitted in serious condition after suffering “burns”, while stressing that the sinking could have been caused by a fire in the boat.
“Someone was smoking inside the boat. You already know that these boats carry fuel,” said the governor of Ziguinchor, who stressed that the authorities have opened an investigation to try to determine who organized the crossing.
