A military court in North Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo, has sentenced eight soldiers to death for shooting dead two civilians when they intervened in an operation to limit traffic.
Four of the soldiers belong to the National Guard unit, while the other four are part of the Military Police, according to the United Nations radio station in the African country, Radio Okapi.
This conviction could contribute to strengthening civil-military collaboration in the area, said Thierry Gasisiro, civil society rapporteur after the verdict. Following several security incidents, this ruling has responded to a pressing expectation among the local population.
