North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Tuesday oversaw a test of a 240-millimeter rocket launch system “technically upgraded” in its maneuverability and firing capability, amid heightened tensions on the Korean peninsula.
“The 240mm rocket launcher has proven to be advantageous in all aspects, including the newly implemented guidance system, controllability and destructive power,” he said, adding that he ordered “continued production of new artillery pieces and equipment,” according to a statement reported by North Korean news agency KCNA.
Over the weekend, Kim called for “developing and producing more suicide drones of various types to be used by tactical infantry and special operations units” to counter any type of attack on land or sea. He also called for developing strategic underwater weapons such as nuclear torpedoes as well as putting emphasis on underwater suicide drones.
In recent months, bilateral tensions have escalated, including the exchange of balloons containing propaganda and rubbish. Seoul has also resumed broadcasting propaganda via loudspeakers at the border, which it did for the first time in six years on June 9, while it has restarted live-fire exercises near the shared border.
North Korean authorities have also stepped up their launches of ballistic missiles and other projectiles, in what they describe as a warning against Seoul’s actions and its joint maneuvers with Washington. Both countries are still technically at war, since the Korean War (1950-1953) ended with an armistice, with no peace agreement to date.
