At least four injured in multiple stabbings in Australia

Aug. 25 () –

At least four people have been injured, including a police officer, in a multiple stabbing in Sydney, Australia, which follows several similar attacks this year, Australian police reported on Sunday.

“Emergency services are responding to an incident in Engadine where four people, including a police officer, have been injured following an accident and a suspected stabbing incident recently,” police said in a statement.

The injured include, in addition to the alleged perpetrator, an officer who “suffered a severe laceration to his left wrist,” apparently during the arrest; a woman “believed to have been a passenger in the crashed vehicle” who also suffered multiple injuries; and a fourth person whose connection to the accident has not yet been clarified. “All four are being treated by New South Wales Ambulance paramedics,” the statement said.

The incident occurred at around 9:00 a.m. (local time), when several people alerted Sutherland County police about “the collision of two vehicles at the intersection of Princes Highway and Old Bush Road.”

Upon arrival at the scene, officers found “a man, who appeared to be suffering from stab wounds, who was allegedly fleeing the scene of the accident” and who was eventually “arrested with a stun gun.”

Following the incident, authorities have closed the Princes Highway in both directions and advised people to “avoid the area”, assuring that “more information will be provided when confirmed”.

This incident comes after six people were killed and twelve injured in a knife attack in a shopping centre in the Bondi area of Sydney in April.

So far in 2024, Sydney has suffered a series of knife attacks that have led the New South Wales state government to tighten its laws regarding the possession of such weapons.

In June, the state parliament also approved legal initiatives allowing the police to use electronic metal detectors in public places – such as sports venues, shopping centres or transport stations – without the need for a court order.
