Israel extends detention for five reservists suspected of raping Palestinian prisoner

Aug. 4 (EUROPA PRESS) –

An Israeli military court on Sunday decided to extend the pre-trial detention of five reservists suspected of raping a Palestinian prisoner in Sde Teiman prison, the scene of an assault by far-right MPs this week demanding his release.

The five will remain in custody until Wednesday for “further investigations” while the other three suspects are still undergoing questioning after which the court will decide whether to take further action.

Ten soldiers are being held in connection with the case, but prosecutors see no reason to keep the other two under arrest, and they could be released in the coming hours, the Times of Israel reports.

They have all been declared suspects of perpetrating an act of “aggravated sodomy”, aggravated causing physical harm, aggravated abuse and conduct unbecoming a soldier.
