Five arrested in Tel Aviv as protests shrink in response to escalating Middle East conflict

Aug. 4 (EUROPA PRESS) –

Five people were arrested in Tel Aviv on Saturday in violent clashes with police during anti-government protests, which were less attended than in previous times due to fears of an attack amid the escalation of the conflict in the region.

“This evening (…) several protesters illegally gathered on Menachem Begin Road, violently broke through police roadblocks and began marching north, blocking the road and disrupting order,” Israeli police said on their X social media account.

These “violent” clashes with security forces took place on Menachem Begin Street in Tel Aviv, which had been closed by the police to “allow a balance between the freedom to protest legitimately and freedom of movement.”

Some 1,000 people gathered in the Israeli town, according to the Times of Israel, in a turnout “much lower than usual”, attributed to fear of an attack by Iran and Hezbollah.

From Hostage Square, the protesters marched to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) headquarters on Begin Street, where they were dispersed by mounted police. Labor MPs Naama Lazimi and Gilad Kariv, who were present at the rally, called on the police not to charge the protesters, saying they were “non-violent.”

Demonstrations have also taken place outside the official residence of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem and outside the home of Defense Minister Yoav Gallant in Amikam, near Hadera.
