August may not be a month when there’s much to do if you haven’t been lucky enough to go on holiday (or if you’ve already had one this year and are back to work). But we do have some very juicy releases on platforms: some of the most powerful series and films of the year are there waiting, so no excuses, there’s a lot to watch this August.
Godzilla Minus One Minus Color
‘Godzilla Minus One’ has been one of the undisputed films of the year: a dramatic and overwhelming revitalization of the Godzilla myth that also had a second run in theaters, for a very limited time, in a black and white version that channels even better the spirit of its genuine inspiration, ‘Japan under the terror of the monster’ that kicked off the excesses of the mythical radioactive saurian. A masterpiece in a unique version.
- On Netflix August 1st
Rebel Moon – The Director’s Cut
The two ‘Rebel Moon’ films were perhaps not the runaway success that Netflix and Zack Snyder had hoped for, and this remake of ‘Star Wars’ with the director’s dark and greasy aesthetic was not well received by the public or critics. But if you liked them, August is going to be your Christmas, because the director’s cuts are coming, rated R, packed with blood and adult content and with almost two hours more footage in total.
- On Netflix August 2nd
Chaos
Let’s be honest: We have no idea what to expect from Kaos, the theological fantasy comedy that’s coming to Netflix in late August, but we do know that Jeff Goldblum is on board, so we’re in for a treat. Goldblum plays none other than Zeus, who one morning discovers a wrinkle on his forehead. Believing it to be the harbinger of an ancient prophecy foretelling his destruction, Zeus becomes convinced that his downfall is drawing near, and indeed it is: on Earth, humans are rebelling against his all-powerful rule.
- On Netflix on August 29
Terminator Zero
The last few movies about the killer robot (or guardian angel) from the future haven’t been particularly satisfying, but this new Netflix anime seems to be building on that. lore The juiciest and most interesting one invented by James Cameron: the one related to the metallic sociopath from the first film. We leave Saraj and John Connor aside and go to 1997, the year to which the Resistance of the future sends a soldier. His mission: to protect a scientist who is designing an artificial intelligence capable of countering Skynet before Judgement Day arrives. Action, violence and retrofuturism for an essential cyberpunk date.
- On Netflix on August 29
Batman: The Caped Crusader
Forget about movies: animation has been, since the days of Fleischer’s Superman, the best way to faithfully capture the dynamism, imagination and scale of superheroes. That’s why the Batman animated series from the nineties is the best adaptation of the character and why this new version exclusive to Prime Video has us excited: it picks up the aesthetic legacy of that one and brings it to the new times. The creative team includes such promising names as JJ Abrams, Matt Reeves, Bruce Timm and Ed Brubaker, so this August promises to arrive masked (despite the heat).
- On Prime Video on August 1st
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power
The Comic-Con trailer for the ambitious Prime Video series based on Tolkien’s books, ‘The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power’ has made a couple of things clear: that Galadriel is going to give in to the temptation of putting on a ring of power and, better yet, that Sauron is going to be one of the absolute protagonists of this season. Much better: a fresh approach for a series that, everything points to, improving on its luxurious previous season.
- On Prime Video on August 29
Action
87North, the production company created by ex-students who have directed films such as ‘John Wick’, ‘Atomic Blonde’, ‘Deadpool 2’ or that recent and fabulous love letter to the profession that is ‘The Specialist’, is behind this six-episode documentary where the team of specialists from the house talk about their lives, hobbies and accidents. Doubles of the main stars of the world and responsible for all the magic of the best action cinema, the documentary goes over the secrets of their filming and the sacrifices they have to face. Movistar Plus+ completes the premiere with a special programme of great action films.
- On Movistar Plus+ on August 12
When evil lurks
We’ve had a spectacular run of releases in which extraordinary horror films follow one another, delving into the darkest corners of the human species. This Movistar Plus+ release is one of the best recent examples of the genre, and is directed by the notable Argentine director Demián Rugna (‘Aterrados’), with which he won the award for Best Feature Film at Sitges 2023 although it landed in theaters just a few months ago. In a remote Argentine town, two brothers discover a possessed man about to release all the evil he keeps inside.
- On Movistar Plus+ on August 14
Rick and Morty: The Anime
While we wait for the next season, we have the best possible interlude: ‘Rick and Morty’ in anime version. It keeps all the acidity and frenetic pace of the classic series intact, and even many of its plots (while Rick relaxes in a pseudo-world between multiverses, Summer helps Space Beth fight against the Galactic Federation and Morty falls in love with a mysterious girl who turns out to be a timeless being), but tightening the aesthetic nuts to remind us of Japanese animation. A gratuitous wink or an exploration of anime narratives? We’ll have to wait until mid-August to find out.
The Bear – S3
Beyond the logical evolution of the series, there is a big gap between the second season and the third of what is one of the most prestigious series in the world. streaming Current: It is the time that has passed from being a cult secret and a series for gourmets (excuse the redundancy) to become a multi-award-winning artifact very close to the mainstream. Its protagonists, Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri, have become stars. And the opinions we receive about this third season are that the series has lost some of its punch initial by converting the initial sandwich shop into a prestigious restaurant. This August we will be able to form our own opinion.
- On Disney+ on August 14
Only Murders in the Building – Season 4
One of the most refreshing and endearing series on the grid is now in its fourth season, giving a twist to its usual setting: our three protagonists, the indefatigable Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez travel to Hollywood because a studio wants to adapt their podcast to film. The most star-studded season so far will include appearances by Meryl Streep, Eugene Levy, Eva Longoria, Zach Galifianakis, Molly Shannon, Kumail Nanjiani and Melissa McCarthy.
- On Disney+ on August 27
Blood on the lips
One of the most unique and unclassifiable films of the year, halfway between David Lynch, a superheroine movie directed by Russ Meyer and a kind of version of the first police films by the Coen brothers but in a dirty code. Directed by Rose Glass, who already surprised us with ‘Saint Maud’, and although we had no doubt that Kristen Stewart is an absolute icon, the real discovery of the film is Katy O’Brian as the bodybuilder. homeless with whom Stewart begins a torrid relationship marked by passion and steroids. The performance is rounded off by a spectacular Ed Harris in absolute goblin mode.
Knuckles
Following the first two blockbuster Sonic the Hedgehog films, we have our first spin-off series that holds up very well visually. We follow Knuckles on a journey of self-discovery as he agrees to train Wade as his protégé and teach him the ways of the Echidna warrior. Idris Elba returns to voice the protagonist, and Jeff Fowler, director of the films, is also in charge of supervising the series.
- On SkyShowtime on August 9th
