Jordanian foreign minister condemns Haniyeh’s assassination, calls on Israel to assume responsibility
Aug. 2 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The governments of Jordan and Kuwait have said on Thursday that they will not allow the use of their territory or airspace to carry out attacks against other countries in the region, in reference to Iran’s expected response against Israel for allegedly killing the leader of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), Ismail Haniyeh, in Tehran, and to a possible Israeli counterattack.
“If there is an escalation, our first priority is to protect Jordan and the security of Jordanians. We will oppose anyone who wants to violate our airspace. Jordan will not be a battlefield. We expose ourselves to many consequences and repercussions,” said Jordanian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi, according to the Jordanian daily ‘Addustour’.
He said that Israel must assume its responsibility, and that it “cannot continue killing and murdering and endangering the future of the region.” In this regard, he explained that Hamas is an “idea” that cannot be eliminated, and stressed the need to offer an alternative to the Palestinians so that “they know that they have a future instead of the fear they live in” with the current attacks in the Gaza Strip and the operations in the West Bank.
It is worth noting that Safadi held a telephone conversation on Thursday with Iran’s acting Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri, in which they discussed the “dangerous escalation in the region” as well as “ways to reduce it and protect the region from the disastrous consequences” of a large-scale conflict.
The Jordanian foreign minister also called for an end to the aggression against Gaza and condemned the murder of Haniyeh as “a crime of escalation” and a “violation of international law.”
Kuwaiti Defense Ministry spokesman Hamad al-Saqer said the country would “never be used as a platform” to attack other countries in the region and would not allow its land and air space to be used to carry out military operations, according to the KUNA news agency.
