US President Joe Biden on Thursday offered his condolences over the deaths of more than 200 people in India following landslides earlier this week due to heavy rains in the southern state of Kerala.
“Our prayers are with the victims of this tragic event, and we grieve with the families who have lost loved ones,” reads a White House statement signed by the US president and his wife, Jill.
The US president praised the “courage” of the Indian emergency personnel who have been involved in the “complex tasks” of the rescue from the very beginning. “We will continue to think of the Indian people in these difficult times,” they added.
Indian authorities have confirmed that more than 200 people have died in landslides in Kerala state earlier this week. Many more are believed to be missing.
The Indian Armed Forces deployed around 200 Security and Defence Corps personnel and a medical team on Tuesday to oversee the rescue efforts. Air Force helicopters have also been sent to the affected area.
