At least 11 dead and hundreds missing due to heavy rains in northern India

Aug. 1 (EUROPA PRESS) –

At least eleven people have died and more than a hundred remain unaccounted for due to heavy rains over the last day in the state of Delhi, in northern India, where authorities have issued a red alert and closed schools.

Heavy rain has inundated much of India’s capital, which has seen record levels of rainfall for the first time in 14 years, NDTV reported.

The deaths are concentrated in Delhi, Gurugram and Greater Noida, where major roads are currently impassable. A dozen flights have also been diverted due to torrential rains, eight of them to Jaipur and two to Lucknow.

Delhi Education Minister Atishi has confirmed that classes will be suspended on Thursday due to safety concerns, while the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has not forecast any abatement and has maintained its alert. According to the latest bulletin, heavy rains and thunderstorms will continue in Delhi until August 5.
