Iranian authorities have requested an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council to discuss the attack carried out early this morning against the country’s capital, Tehran, in which the leader of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), Ismail Haniyeh, was killed.

In his letter, reported by ISNA, the Iranian representative to the United Nations, Amir Said Irwani, refers to the “terrorist act of the Zionist regime in Tehran,” alluding directly to Israel, which has not yet commented on Haniye’s death, although Hamas’s partners take this link for granted.

“This letter is sent with urgency and deep concern over the recent aggressive terrorist attack against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Islamic Republic of Iran by the Israeli regime,” the Iranian representative added, denouncing the “atrocious attack” perpetrated against a “guest” of Tehran.

Haniyeh was in Iran after attending the inauguration of Masud Pezeshkian as the country’s new president the day before. The attack took place in the early hours of the morning, but the Israeli authorities have not yet commented on the matter.
