Republicans in the nation’s least populous state will nominate their candidate for the state’s seat in the US House of Representatives on Tuesday, August 16. It is currently occupied by Liz Cheney, vice chair of the House Committee on the Attack on Capitol Hill. As a candidate for re-election, she is facing a candidate supported by Donald Trump.
With Guillaume Naudin, Special Envoy to Wyoming
This is the Republican primary that sums up all the others. It symbolizes the divisions running through the Republican camp. On the one hand, a traditional conservative, Liz Cheney, is presented. She is the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, who was elected to the state at the time, and thus has a name that counts in Wyoming. She but she has gained notoriety by becoming the best-known face of the few Republicans in Congress who voted in favor of impeachment after January 6 and who still dare to oppose Donald Trump. It was 10 of the 211 Republicans in the House who publicly confronted the former president.
A commitment that Liz Cheney -and the other detractors of the former president- is paying dearly for, since she has already been removed from the Republican hierarchy in the House of Representatives.
Trump has sworn his doom
The former president has sworn his downfall. He gave his support to Harriet Hageman, a virtual unknown. In fact, Donald Trump showed up in person at the end of May to ask voters to get rid of Liz Cheney.
The personality of the outgoing candidate is also the subject of debate. Liz Cheney continues to have her supporters, but others, closer to Donald Trump, question her commitment to Wyoming, noting that she spends much more time in Washington criticizing the former president. In fact, she hasn’t been on the ground much. She says so herself. Perhaps also for security reasons. The words “traitor” and “treason” are often used against her. There is a certain animosity against her and everything that comes from Washington. And the latest opinion polls are very favorable to her opponent.
a conservative state
Wyoming is the least populated state in the country. Hardly more than half a million inhabitants for an area that does not reach half that of France. It produces two things: oil and cows. In fact, its inhabitants call it the Cowboy State. It is a conservative state that overwhelmingly voted for Trump in the last two presidential elections. Hard-fought election campaigns in Wyoming are rare. In fact, there has been little political activity, even in the last few days, other than video messages from each of the candidates.
A ballot box open to non-members of the Republican Party
But in Wyoming, primaries aren’t limited to party members, as Susan Stubson, a GOP member from Natrona County, central Wyoming, and a Liz Cheney supporter, explains.
“It is very easy to change party affiliation. We are seeing an unusually high number of party registrations. These are probably Democrat people who change their party affiliation and become Republican, especially to vote for Cheney. On the other hand, there have been many new Republican registrations. And now the question is whether these people are unhappy with Liz Cheney, and want to vote for her opponent Harriet Hageman, or the other way around,” she explains.
Even the former Democratic governor of Wyoming has publicly said he is turning Republican to vote for Liz Cheney. It is not clear that this is enough to close the enormous advantage that the latest opinion polls give the Trump candidate.
