South Korea achieves its goal of five golds at the Paris 2024 Olympics

South Korea has achieved its goal of winning five gold medals at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, just four days after the opening ceremony.

Monday was a historic day for the South Korean delegation. Ban Hyo-jin, 16, became the country’s youngest athlete to win a Summer Olympic gold, winning the women’s 10m individual air rifle event. The victory also marked South Korea’s 100th gold medal in Summer Olympic history.

In archery, a discipline in which the Asian country traditionally excels, the men’s team made up of Kim Je-deok, Kim Woo-jin and Lee Woo-seok defeated France in the final by a score of 5-1. The South Korean archers demonstrated extraordinary precision, achieving 14 perfect tens out of 18 arrows, despite the pressure of the home crowd on the Esplanade des Invalides. This victory represents South Korea’s third consecutive gold in this Olympic event.

In addition to the gold medals, Huh Mimi also won a silver medal in judo, in the women’s under 57 kilogram category. Huh, who is of Japanese origin but has been competing for South Korea since 2022, thus fulfilled her paternal grandmother’s wish.

With these results, South Korea reaffirms its position as a sporting power, meeting its expectations in this edition of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
