Khamenei says that “respect for Christ” is something “unquestionable” for Muslims

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Tuesday condemned the depiction of the painting “The Last Supper” during the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics on Friday, a controversial move that has prompted the Olympic organizer to apologize.
“Respect for Christ is something unquestionable among Muslims. These offenses against the great figures of divine religions, including Christ, deserve, in our opinion, to be condemned,” Khamenei said on his account on the social network X.
Friday’s ceremony drew criticism for a banquet scene in which an actor playing the Greek god Dionysus took center stage at a table with drag queens, in a reinterpretation of Leonardo Da Vinci’s painting “The Last Supper” about Jesus’ final meal with his apostles before his crucifixion.
The controversy has reached such a point that the organiser of the 2024 Paris Olympics, Anne Descamps, had to come forward on Sunday to apologise for any offence caused by religious representations during the opening ceremony. The French Catholic Church itself called what happened a “mockery and mockery” of Christianity.
