The International Association of Political Consultants (IAPC) issued a statement expressing its concern regarding the development and outcome of the recent presidential elections in Venezuela, where the current president Nicolás Maduro was re-elected.
According to the statement, reports from independent observers and opposition groups point to multiple irregularities and undemocratic practices during the electoral process, raising doubts about the legitimacy of the results.
Among the main concerns highlighted by the IAPC are widespread intimidation and coercion of voters, including the use of “red spots” near polling stations, as well as unequal access to media, with state media favoring the ruling party. Also mentioned are the disqualification of leading opposition figures and parties, allegations of vote-buying through promises of food and other benefits, inconsistencies in counting and tabulation procedures, and a general lack of transparency in the process.
The association notes that these problems, coupled with the current economic and humanitarian crisis in Venezuela, have created an environment unfavourable to free and fair elections. It also questions the rapid announcement of results by the National Electoral Council.
In the statement, the IAPC calls on the international community to carefully examine the electoral process and results. It also urges the Venezuelan government to allow an independent audit of the vote and address concerns raised by the opposition and international observers.
The statement underlines the importance of fostering genuine political dialogue and implementing electoral reforms to ensure that future elections in Venezuela meet international democratic standards.
The association reaffirms its commitment to supporting efforts that strengthen democratic institutions and practices globally, offering its assistance to restore electoral integrity and public confidence in the Venezuelan political system.
