Several European countries have expressed their doubts about the presidential elections held on Sunday in Venezuela and have called for transparency and verifiable data.
“I have many doubts about the regular conduct of the elections in Venezuela. We request verifiable results and access to documents: Does the result announcing Maduro’s victory really reflect the will of the people?” Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said in a message posted on the social network X.
Germany is also calling for transparency. “The announced election results are not enough to clear up the doubts about the counting in Venezuela. We are calling for the publication of the detailed results from all polling stations and access to all voting and electoral documentation for the opposition and observers. #transparency,” Berlin said.
The British Foreign Office has expressed its “concern” over “allegations of serious irregularities in the counting” and the published results of the elections. It is therefore calling for the “rapid and transparent publication of the full and detailed results to ensure that the result reflects the vote of the Venezuelan people.”
The Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has valued the “participation” in the electoral meeting and believes that “impartial verification of the results is necessary.” “Only transparency will guarantee legitimacy. We appeal to democratic sincerity and the spirit of dialogue,” it said before mentioning the Portuguese citizens living in Venezuela: “we always support the Portuguese community.”
Meanwhile, Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp has called for “respect for the democratic will” of the Venezuelan people who participated “in large numbers” in the elections. “The Kingdom of the Netherlands is concerned about current events and calls for full transparency in the electoral process and in the management of the results,” he appealed.
