Finnish authorities announced Friday that they are investigating a possible violation of their territorial waters south of the port city of Hamina by a ship belonging to the Russian Baltic Fleet.

The Finnish Border Guard has opened an investigation into the incident, which involves the Russian research ship ‘Mikhail Kazansky’, used by Moscow to explore the seabed, public broadcaster YLE reported.

The vessel travelled approximately 1.2 nautical miles (more than two kilometres) in Finnish territorial waters. A Border Guard patrol escorted the ship after it was detected by surveillance systems and did not respond to radio calls.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Defence, the latest territorial violation occurred on 10 June, when four Russian aircraft crossed Finnish airspace off the coasts of Loviisa and Porvoo.
