Russian authorities on Friday declared the Free Russia Foundation, founded in 2014 in the United States and based in Washington and Brussels, an “extremist organization.”
The Justice Ministry has included the organisation on its list of civil and religious organisations carrying out “extremist activities”, which implies a ban on its activities, the Russian news agency Interfax reported.
The Free Russia Foundation states on its website that it “unites and coordinates the global efforts of activists, organizations and programs that share its vision” and “actively supports political development and economic reforms, defending democracies from autocratic threats in Russia’s neighboring countries, Europe and globally.”
The organisation, which has regional offices in Germany, Estonia, Georgia, Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine, is chaired by Natalia Arno and includes among its vice-presidents Evgenia Kara-Murza, wife of an activist sentenced in April 2023 to 25 years in prison for high treason.
