ECLAC will present updated figures on foreign direct investment in Latin America and the Caribbean and proposals to increase it

The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) will launch on Thursday, August 1, at 11:00 a.m. Chile time (UTC/GMT-4), its annual report Foreign Direct Investment in Latin America and the Caribbean 2024, which offers a complete overview of the evolution of these flows at the global, regional and national levels. This year, the publication also sets out a series of guidelines to increase this type of investment at the national and subnational levels, as well as to increase its impact on productive transformation.

The main conclusions of the document will be announced by José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, Executive Secretary of ECLAC, in a hybrid press conference (in person and online) held from the headquarters of the United Nations regional organization in Santiago, Chile.

As is traditional, the first chapter of the study details the amounts of foreign direct investment (FDI) received by each country and subregion in 2023, and examines the main trends observed in relation to these flows. It also addresses the behavior of Latin American transnational companies, known as translatinas.

The second chapter analyses the policies for attracting foreign direct investment implemented in Latin America and the Caribbean and other regions of the world, and proposes 17 guidelines for increasing this investment and its positive effects on economies, considering that FDI is called upon to play a leading role in the productive development policies of Latin American and Caribbean countries.

Finally, the third chapter examines the trends, determinants, policies and guidelines of foreign direct investment at the subnational level, based on case studies from the region. It includes various recommendations to maximize the benefits derived from this source of resources in the different territories within the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean.

Journalists are invited to attend the ECLAC headquarters in Santiago, Chile to participate in the press conference in person.
