New rocket attack reported against US-led coalition base in Iraq

The Ain al-Assad base in western Iraq, used by the US-led international coalition, has been the target of a new rocket attack, with no reports of casualties so far.

Iraqi security sources quoted by Iraqi television channel Al Sumaria have indicated that the perimeter of the base has been reached and have stressed that an operation is underway to try to determine the point from which the attack was carried out.

The pro-Iranian militia coalition Islamic Resistance of Iraq has carried out dozens of attacks against US bases in both Iraq and Syria in a show of support for the Palestinian people following the conflict between Israel and the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas).

The attack is the second against US facilities in the country in about a week, following a five-month hiatus after these militias announced a halt to their attacks following the death of three US soldiers in the impact of a drone at a base on the border between Jordan and Syria.

The tensions prompted the Iraqi government to reiterate its request for the withdrawal of international troops from the country, arguing that they are no longer needed to combat the jihadist group Islamic State as they help destabilize the situation in the Asian country.

In fact, Ali al-Fatlawi, a senior official of the armed group Harakat Ansarala al-Aufiya, said that the militias had paused their operations to give the Iraqi government time to negotiate the withdrawal of US troops, adding that they had restarted them due to delays in the process and Washington’s continued support for Israel.

“Military operations against the American presence have been restarted, which means that attacks against this occupation will continue,” he said, according to the Shafaq news portal. “Any response by the Americans to the operations of the Iraqi resistance factions will lead to an increase in attacks against US interests and targets in Iraq. We have no American response,” he said.
