In the middle of last month, Elon Musk said at Tesla’s annual shareholder meeting that the company’s market capitalization could exceed that of Microsoft or Apple in the future. A key part of this spectacular growth will not be electric cars, but the humanoid robot Optimus.
The entrepreneur envisions a future where robots will not only play an important role in the manufacturing process of products, but also in the homes of millions of people. For this to become a reality, however, the company must go a long way, possibly for many years.
Starting at home
Through a message on XMusk said on Monday that Tesla’s humanoid robot will be used for internal use first. The firm will deploy some units as soon as next yearThis will be the prelude to the arrival to external clients, which will take place in 2026 when more units are manufactured.
Tesla already has two Optimus robots performing tasks autonomously at one of its facilities, so the next move would take this to the next level. It should be noted that, at least for now, we are talking about prototypes of robots that are in a very early stage of development.
In 2021, it came to light that the company was working on its own humanoid robot, a project that materialized publicly the following year. The first version of Optimus walked on stage, greeted and even made some dance stepsalthough not much more. An improved version appeared last year.
Now, Musk isn’t the only one betting on humanoid robots. Figure has at least one of its test units working in a BMW factory. Agility Robotics, meanwhile, reached an agreement with Amazon to deploy its Digit robot in the e-commerce company’s operations centers.
