US recognises Israel's right to self-defence after Houthi attack on Tel Aviv

Jul 21. (EUROPA PRESS) –

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on Saturday conveyed to his Israeli counterpart, Yoav Galant, the White House’s support for the State of Israel following the Houthi rebel attack on Tel Aviv and recognized its right to defend itself.

Austin and Gallant discussed by phone “Israel’s response to the Houthi attack on Tel Aviv on July 19, which killed one Israeli citizen and injured others.”

In this regard, the US representative has argued that “Israel’s action came after months of Houthi attacks against the Israeli state” and has reaffirmed “the United States’ strong commitment to the security” of the Jewish state, also supporting its “right to self-defense.”

The call comes after Israeli airstrikes on Saturday bombed the port city of Hodeida in western Yemen, killing at least three people and wounding 87, according to a report released by the Yemeni Ministry of Health. The day before, a Houthi rebel drone attacked Tel Aviv, killing one person and wounding dozens.

Israel claims that the Houthis have launched more than 220 drones, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles against its territory in the past nine months.

They have also launched numerous attacks in the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea in retaliation for the offensive unleashed by Israel on the Gaza Strip since the Hamas attacks of October 7, 2023.
