The judge investigating Begoña Gómez indicts businessman Barrabés after testifying as a witness

Barrabés, before the judge in the case of Begoña Gómez: "I once saw Sánchez in Moncloa in a round of the innovation sector"

Judge Juan Carlos Peinado, who is investigating Begoña Gómez, has decided to heed the accusations of the public and has decided that the businessman Juan Carlos Barrabés will be charged in the case that revolves around the professional activity of the wife of the President of the Government. Barrabés testified a few days ago after being discharged from hospital and, in addition to denying irregularities in his public contracts, he detailed his meetings in Moncloa with Gómez herself and on one occasion with Pedro Sánchez. He has been summoned to testify again, this time with a lawyer and not as a witness, on July 29, according to Europa Press.

Juan Carlos Barrabés, who was hospitalised until recently due to serious health problems, testified on 15 July before Judge Peinado via videoconference. He was a professor on the master’s degree directed by Begoña Gómez and also has a company, Innova Next. Through this company, also set up as a temporary joint venture, Barrabés has obtained several million euros in public contracts related to innovation in recent years.

Part of the case, opened by Judge Peinado following a complaint from Manos Limpias which provided several press reports as evidence, revolves around whether Barrabés obtained contracts from the public company Red.es in an irregular manner and thanks to his relationship with Begoña Gómez. The pseudo far-right union cites the letters that Gómez signed in support of the project promoted by Barrabés, similar to the letters signed by organisations such as the Madrid City Council.

The investigation into some of these contracts has been taken over by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office, and throughout the case the judge has not found evidence of irregularities in the processing of the contracts. Two reports from the Central Operative Unit (UCO) of the Civil Guard have ruled out these alleged illegalities or preferential treatment, while two journalists who testified in the case also acknowledged that they had not found any evidence in this regard.

The indictment of Barrabés was requested by the popular accusations after his testimony: Vox, Iustitia Europa and HazteOir asked the judge to summon the businessman again, considering that he had withheld relevant information when appearing as a witness, forced to tell the truth. Popular accusations that have announced their interest in delving deeper into the meetings in which Sánchez participated, which is why they have requested the testimony of the President of the Government.
